Ai, 3D Printing and the Art Comunity

Art seems to be part of human DNA. Since the beginning of mankind, people have used art and creativity to express themselves and build the world around them. Just as nature created us, we try to copy nature in many of our art forms. From the cave paintings created by our ancestors just as human kind began.

To the great Egyptians with their astonishing art work and architecture. To the Romans with their amazing statues, frescos and far more influential architectural design even than the Egyptians. This is just to tip of the human creativity iceberg, as this list could go on and on.

Art can be great for channeling your energy in to something positive and is often used as a form of therapy. Therefore I believe that art is a fundamental part of humanity and without it we wouldn’t have the amazing things around us in our modern world. Ai is one of those amazing new things in our modern world, and also 3D printing.

These technologies are revolutionary and I believe can help humanity in many ways. But I feel we must be careful not to let these technologies completely take over our natural creativity that comes from the magic in the best parts of the human spirit. I feel that Ai and 3D printing technology could be used to supplement and assist the creative process in many ways.

But if it starts to completely take over so that human kind no longer feels the need to exercise their creativity we are losing one of the best and most fundamental parts of humanity. This is why it’s more important than ever to support artists that still exercise their creativity, so that their skills can be used to educate people about the artistic process.

And to inspire people, to show them what real human creativity is capable of. And to inspire them to think of what they might be capable of if they search deep within themselves and unleash their own creativity. When I said earlier that art seems to be in the DNA of human kind, that also comes from the feeling that it is very much a part of my DNA.

As I didn’t wake up one day and think I want to be a sculptor, it feels more like it chose me, and therefore it’s part of who I am as a person. I love the feeling of infinite possibilities when I look at a lump of clay as it can literally be anything you want it to be with enough time and effort put in to it.

I started sculpting when I was just four years old after my parents bought me my first packet or plasticine. I loved it! It captured my imagination and the best part for my parents was it kept me quiet. The sad thing today day is that people seem to be gradually forgetting what real human creativity is.

They think that printing something with a 3D printer is creative. Or clicking a button for Ai to generate a picture that looks quite amazing is a truly creative way to create a work of art. But it’s missing that magic that comes from the best parts of the human spirit to create something quick, easy and cheap.

Again there is a place for Ai and 3D printing but it should be used wisely and the people using it should be very transparent about the fact that they have used this technology, so that consumers know what they are buying and how it was made. That is why I’m as transparent as possible about my work.

All my sculptures are created by myself, from scratch, the good old fashioned way, with clay, my hands and my own creativity. This obviously costs more, due to the time and materials used. And that is why so many people are attracted to cheaper mass produced products, many of which will have been created with Ai or 3D printing.

And there is nothing wrong with that as long as the consumer is aware and mindful of how the product is made. At that point as a consumer you may want to ask yourself if you’d rather pay more to support a creative human being? Or do you want to support a large corporation who very often only seem to care about profits rather than people and real creativity that can inspire and hopefully make people happier.

At different times you may come up with a different answer, and that’s ok. This is not written to make anyone feel bad about their decision, only to make people fully aware of the choices out there today when buying products. And to be mindful of the impact Ai and 3D printing has on traditional artists around the world.

With that said you will come across plenty of videos here, showing me making the sculptures I produce with my own two hands and imagination.
